TSS at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music

Helping catalyze the expansion of small ensemble music at the University of Georgia

Expanding music appreciation in Northeast Georgia with the help of UGA.

In 2018, we funded three graduate assistantships in the Hodgson School by way of initiating a chamber music support fund. Each student studies under the direction of a faculty mentor. The awards are intended to help catalyze expansion of small-ensemble music at UGA. We aspire to build a robust program through cooperative fundraising, establishing a faculty-student chamber music society, founding a faculty-based professional ensemble to lead this, encouraging the assembly of multiple student, faculty, and mixed small ensembles, and finally, in keeping with UGA's outreach mission as a land-grant institution, helping its musician's take live serious music widely to surrounding communities and demonstrate the truth that really is, Better Music, Better World.

About UGA's Hodgson School of Music

The University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music, with about 550 students and 65 faculty (8.5:1 student-to-faculty ratio), is a fully accredited institution growing steadily in national standing among schools of music. The Hodgson School offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and with nearly 350 performances each year, provides many opportunities for students to take courses and perform in small to large ensembles from chamber groups, to large chorales, and the UGA Symphony Orchestra The School has some of the finest modern facilities in the country, including its own building and the adjacent Performing Arts Center. The latter draws world-renowned artists each year to the beautiful UGA campus, including major international orchestras and a twice-yearly residency of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. A new festival program, Chamber Music Athens begun in May 2019, will figure prominently in the future of TSS UGA. The Hodgson School's mission is to pursue world-class excellence in all its broad areas of musical endeavor, and also, as an entity in a land-grant institution, contribute to the cultural life of the university community and surrounding Northeast Georgia region through a variety of musical outreach presentations and offerings.

TSS Chamber Music Support Program

In spring 2019, we also contributed support to the inaugural Chamber Music Athens festival, a hugely successful Hodgson School initiative that will reprise again during May 10-19 in 2020 (https://www.chambermusicathens.org). We will continue our support of this fine endeavor, as we work also to grow our TSS/UGA program to where it can become musically a part of it.
